Known for its cultural heritage, Kolkata, or “Calcutta” as it was known before 2001, is the capital of West Bengal state, and India’s third biggest city. Situated on the banks of Hoogly River, it was once the initial establishment location for East India Company in seventeenth century. Apparently it also has the oldest serving Port, and the only port on the river, in India. It was this city which empowers the thought of nationalism which later on turned into nation wide independence movement.

Dance, Drama, literature and other traditional arts are an important part of Bengali culture. Some of the most prominent painters, writers, poets and spiritual leaders are from this city only. Not only in culture, the city is also rich in archaeological heritage. Being a colonial stronghold, the city boats some beautiful buildings which are now turned into museums or government offices. Though it is considered as the birth place of modern India, people here are still very much attached to their routes. This is the reason it still gives the feeling of older times.
