Hemis festival is the biggest of all Tibetan festivals in Ladakh. It is a colourful extravaganza, celebrated on the 10th day of the Tibetan lunar month. The festival is celebrated to mark the birth of the Guru Padmasambhava who was the founder of Tantric Buddhism in Tibet. On this occasion, local people are seen wonderfully dressed in their finest outfits. A colourful fair which is specially organised on this occasion is the another major attraction for the visitors. The fair showcase a wide range of local handicrafts which gives you an option of getting some wonderful souvenirs to take back home, for your loved ones.
During the festival, the lamas in the Hemis monastery perform the splendid dances wearing the facial masks and colourful robes as they present the drama of the life and mission of their Guru. This mask dance is also called as chams performance which is an essential part of Tantric custom. Traditional instruments i.e large-pan drums, small trumpets and large size wind instruments are used by the musicians to play the music for this extravaganza. The head lama is also present and presides over the function. It is believed that watching these sacred rituals provides spiritual strength and good health. A two day program takes place in the Hemis monastery which is the largest monastery in the region. Hemis festival is attended by many Tibetan religious teachers including his holiness, Dalai Lama. Tourist from across the globe visit Ladakh during this time of the year to be a part of this colorful and spiritual extravaganza. All in all, Hemis festival comes as a breeze of spirituality, joy and energy which transform this whole region.
