An ancient fort dating 18th century built by Ahilya Bai Holkar, it has been transformed over the period into a lovingly boutique hotel with heritage touch to it. Rising above the sacred River Narmada, the resort is located in a small but friendly town of Maheshwar. Prince Richard Holkar, the host at fort, has a unique charm to his personality and is a well travelled and welcoming person.
The unique location of the resort makes it something special, overlooking the Ghats where pilgrims are a regular to worship the sacred river which flows calmly making the whole atmosphere very tranquil and romantic. There are 13 rooms in the hotel building and all of them are different. The rooms design has the impression of local culture and heritage prevailing here. Other than this there is one magnificent tent also and probably has the best location in the fort complex. The fort hotel equally welcomes couples as well as families. The food is another highlight here and indeed experiential, something like well prepared Mughal dishes being served during the candlelit dinner or the western lunch being served in the Garden.
The fort is a destination in itself and a minimum 2 night stay is suggested here to get the feel of local culture here. There are various activities i.e, boat ride on the river, bird watching, textile centre visit or temple visits etc. If there is time, one can visit the deserted but beautiful and interesting city of Mandu. The famous Omkareshwar temple which is an important Hindu temple is also nearby. Other then this, the hotel is one of the best place for celebrating festivals as special events are organised during festivals. Staying at the hotel during some festival can definitely enhance the experience.
